Frequently Asked Questions
This is dependent on the donor and patient’s age and other medical issues. On average a kidney transplant from a living donor lasts 20-25 years and from a deceased donor for 15-20 years. Speak to your doctor for what is going to be relevant for your case.
If the person has some other life-threatening disease such as severe heart disease, infections that cannot be cured, or cancer; or a history of chronic noncompliance to treatments, chronic or ongoing drug or alcohol abuse, or untreated serious psychiatric disorders then they may not be eligible for a kidney transplant. Only after successful treatment of such diseases and conditions will the possibility of a transplant be considered.
Your doctor can help you choose the type of dialysis that is better suited to you. There are 2 types. Peritoneal dialysis is where blood filtered within the lining of the abdomen. This can be done at home and the patient can carry on with regular activities. But, it has to be done everyday. In haemodialysis the blood is filtered outside the body. The procedure takes upto 4 hours and has to be repeated thrice a week.
