The general rule of thumb is to apply ice immediately following an injury and continue for the first few days in case of acute injuries. Ice reduces blood flow to the area and minimizes swelling.
Heat therapy or heat application is helpful with chronic conditions and can ease muscle stiffness and soreness. Also as a general rule the transition to heat therapy is usually done after about 72 hours of an injury.
Exercises such as biking, swimming, and walking are good for a healthy back. Initially, start with short sessions. Always consult a doctor before beginning any new exercise routine.
In general it is safe to occasionally crack your back your joints. If you feel the need the crack it too often then it is better to address and treat the underlying cause.
It is also possible to hurt yourself by using too much force or pressure when cracking your back or by doing it too often.
